How to pass AI detector tools with ChatGPT

Updated: Nov 12, 2023

It’s the dream of everyone with an assignment, get ChatGPT to do the work and pass every detector tool with flying colors. For many students and even working professionals, AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT have become a common part of life, assisting them with a wide range of tasks. However, this increased AI presence has also led to a growing need for plagiarism and AI-content detector tools. Let’s explore those tools and how you can do your best to avoid triggering them.

Understanding AI detection tools

In theory, AI detection tools, like ZeroGPT, Turnitin, and more, are meant to check whether a text contains plagiarism and/or AI written content. But do they work? Does it matter if someone pays for the premium version?

The reality is, even OpenAI stopped promoting their AI detection tool, because it turned out to be unreliable, and came up with the following statement: “As of July 20, 2023, the AI classifier is no longer available due to its low rate of accuracy”. However, they’re working on a new tool, called the AI Classifier (https://openai.com/blog/new-ai-classifier-for-indicating-ai-written-text).

Plagiarism tools turn out to be more reliable, because there is factual information behind the way they work. They can easily find parts of unedited text that look just like another piece of work written before. It does not always mean that there is plagiarism, but it could indicate that information has been copy pasted from somewhere. Remember, plagiarism is taking someone’s work without citing the source.

So far, we haven’t seen any major case of AI detector tools being used to strip someone of a prize, diploma, or more. Some teachers have been testing copies from their students and asking them to do the work again after a positive result from an AI detector tool, but the guidelines and laws are still a blur regarding legal actions and whether a detection tool is concrete evidence.

Now that we know that, let’s dig into how we can make sure that an AI copy passes AI detection tools.

Sneaking past detection tools

Let’s pretend you wrote an article and want to pass AI detection tools. What can you do? You can try a simple prompt:

Please rephrase this article to pass AI detection tools, and use slightly more complex words. Avoid using typical AI wording, make the text less predictable.

If you pay attention closely, you’ll notice that ChatGPT puts capitals in titles, even though it’s not needed. You can ask ChatGPT to stop doing that or remove them manually. These capitals are signs that the text is written by AI, so it’s better to remove them.

Once you have rephrased your text and removed unnecessary capitals, dump your article into an AI detector and see which phrases are detected as AI-written, and simply edit them with your personal touch.

You can also use those additional prompts:

Rephrase this without using unnecessary capitals

Rephrase the text but use (variation)

Rephrase this in the (style/tone) of (xxx)

Rephrase this and add niche-specific vocabulary

Rephrase this and make it less/more academic

Rephrase this and don’t use any bold or formatting

ChatGPT is predictable, and some formatting tricks will make sure your output is quality content. In order to save time editing, you can use the following prompts:

Do not underline any text, don’t use bold, don’t use asterisks or any formatting.

Write your answer again but without (numbers, list format, punctuation, capitals, etc)

In order to do the best rephrasing possible, tell ChatGPT what you want:

Please rephrase this text and make it (longer, shorter, same length), rephrase it with (same vocab, easier words, more complex words, academic level), and don’t use (bold, italic, underline, formatting, etc)

The last tip, of course, is to add as much personal touch in the text as possible.

Conclusion

In summary, the widespread use of AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, has given rise to the necessity for AI detection tools to ensure content authenticity. These tools are designed to identify plagiarism and AI-generated content but have exhibited varying levels of accuracy.

As AI technology continues to advance, adeptly handling AI detection tools is becoming increasingly vital to uphold academic and professional standards in our ever more digital world. Who knows, we might see people becoming specialists in AI detection.
