ChatGPT is more and more popular, and so are other AI tools, and people quickly realized that knowing to write prompts and selling them could be a lucrative activity.
People that want to use AI but don’t want to bother with learning Prompt Engineering will often turn to buying prompts, which means, if you are good at writing prompts, you can make some serious money. Let’s take a look at how to sell your prompts online and make passive income
1) Preparation
Before looking for a solution to sell your prompts, remember those key points:
Do not resell prompts that others made
Provide quality prompts
Make sure you sort your prompts correctly since day 1, otherwise your prompt collection will turn into a nightmare quickly
Don’t sell BS. Only sell prompts if you took the time to get educated in Prompt Engineering first.
If you are selling prompts for different AI tools, make sure to sort them as well. A Midjourney prompt is useless in ChatGPT, don’t sell both in the same package.
Take the time to build a prompt collection that makes sense. Learn a bit of every subject you're making prompts for, you can't sell SEO prompts if you don't even know what SEO stands for.
2) Study the market
You probably saw people selling prompts before, and that’s how you got the idea, but how does it all work? Who is your target buyer? What do you need to do for people to trust you? You need to study the market and figure out your approach. What problem are you solving? What are your arguments?
90% of people selling prompts sell them in an unfriendly format, like a big spreadsheet that lacks any organizing, people do not want to have this kind of final product.
You might also notice people selling prompts through a Notion.so page, which is more organized, but still weird to use for people who don’t use Notion regularly, so how can you do this? There’s a few ways to do this:
Host the prompts on your custom website: You’re basically selling the access to your website (through a membership or one time payment that lets users create their account). This is a good option because it lets you create a really good looking website with a search function, and it’s gonna be easier for the customer to find the prompt they need.
Sell a digital file that is widely compatible: This can be an organized Excel sheet, a Google Spreadsheet file, a document with a clickable table of content. It has to be organized and have clear explanations on how to search for a specific word, tag, or topic.
Sell access to a CMS (content management system): You can use WordPress or Joomla to store all your content and sort them. Some websites even have search, tagging and categorization functionalities.
Sell access to a database: You can use a database in SQL format to store all your prompts and sell access to that database.
Share the prompts on Evernote, Notion, or OneNote: All three have the same sorting system, and they have a search function. A lot of people use Evernote and OneNote.
Use a prompt selling website: See below to find my recommendations for prompt websites.
Share on GitHub: If you’re familiar with GitHub, you can upload and organize your prompts there.
Sell access to a premium organized Discord server: You can set up your own server for free and basically create smaller groups inside that server so people can find the prompts they’re looking for.
3) Think of your whole sales funnel
How are you gonna make people land on your sales page? Do you have other achievements to showcase? If I had to sell prompts, I’d tell people that I know Prompt Engineering, I teach it, and have over 10.000 students on Udemy. What is your story? Why should people trust you? If you are only here to make money and make people understand that, you won’t have a lot of sales.
Build a sales funnel, here are some examples:
Blog posts: Create informative and valuable blog posts related to AI-generated content, creative writing, marketing, design, etc. Use SEO strategies to drive organic traffic to your website and prompt selling page.
Lead magnet: Offer a free downloadable guide or e-book on "The Ultimate Guide to Using AI Prompts for Creative Projects." Collect emails and then do a campaign to make people buy your prompts.
Prompts showcase: Create a dedicated webpage to showcase some of your best prompts. Offer a limited-time discount for prompt bundles or exclusive prompts to incentivize purchases.
Social media ads: Run targeted ads on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn, promoting your AI prompt products to relevant audiences.
4) Build a badass sales page
I have seen countless people selling prompts and most of them didn’t even bother to design a good sales page or picture that summarizes what the customer is getting. Take some time on Canva or Photoshop to design an eye-catching illustration, like this:
Your product description has to be clear:
Who are you and why people can trust you
What’s included in the final product?
What format is the final product
Make sure your description is copywriting and SEO friendly.
5) Pick your platform
Here’s my top 5 websites to sell prompts (not sponsored, no referral links):
1) PromptFlat
PromptFlat is an innovative AI prompt marketplace that offers a flat rate for 4000+ top-notch Chat GPT prompts.
2) PromptBase
PromptBase is a popular marketplace for buying and selling prompts for DALL·E, GPT, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney. Prompt engineers can keep 80% of the sales revenue from their prompts.
3) PromptSea
PromptSea is a special online place where users can turn AI prompts into unique digital collectibles called NFTs. This makes the prompts even more special and valuable. Although PromptSea is a new and innovative idea, it's not as big as other similar places yet.
4) Gumroad
Gumroad is a famous website where creators can sell digital stuff. It's a good option for selling prompts because it's not too expensive, but you might need to do more advertising to make sales.
5) PromptAttack
PromptAttack is a website that focuses on AI prompts. If you sell your prompts there, you can get up to 80% of the money from each sale. You can also put some prompts up for free to show off your work and attract buyers. Right now, it supports Midjourney and ChatGPT, and they plan to add support for Stable Diffusion and DALL-E soon.
That’s it! It does take some work, but it’s doable. Don’t forget to get educated in prompt engineering first.
